Crime lab tech scandals test defendant's right to confront accusers

Crime lab scandals popping up across the
country give weight to a Sixth Amendment argument that a person has a
right to confront his accusers.
At least 11 cases are pending before the
U.S. Supreme Court that challenge the convictions of people whose
lawyers could not cross-examine lab technicians whose reports helped put
the defendants in prison.
In most cases, another analyst, supervisor or expert witness who did not conduct the lab work presented the reports in court.
